Deadlines:
For full consideration of funding for Fall admission, it is recommended that all application materials be received by the Virginia Tech Graduate School by February 1. Spring admission is generally not encouraged, but may be considered under unique circumstances. The Graduate School recommends on-line applications. Application Materials:
The M.A. in Communication at Virginia Tech requires that applications include the following materials:
Items to be sent to the Virginia Tech Graduate School:
- A completed Virginia Tech Graduate School application form. Virginia Tech prefers an on-line application;
- A current resume (part of the Virginia Tech application);
- A statement of purpose that matches up the student's research and career interests with those of the program (part of the Virginia Tech application);
- One official and up-to-date copy of all transcripts of the applicant's undergraduate and graduate record. To be considered for admission, applicants are usually required to have an undergraduate Grade Point Average of at least 3.0;
- The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The subject-specific test is not required. Virginia Tech's Institutional Code for the GREs is 5859;
- The results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants who did not receive their bachelor's degree from an anglophone university and whose first language is not English. A TOEFL score of 600 is required to be considered for admission
Items to be sent directly to the Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Communication:
- One official and up-to-date copy of all transcripts of the applicant's undergraduate and graduate record. To be considered for admission, applicants are usually required to have an undergraduate Grade Point Average of at least 3.0;
- Three letters of recommendation, especially from references such as former professors who are able to access potential for graduate-level work. Letters of recommendation submitted through the on-line application process can be accessed by the department, so there is no need to resend paper copies;
- A writing sample that illustrates the applicant's potential for research;
- A photocopy of the GRE report.
Funding:
A limited number of Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available for exceptional applicants. To be considered for such positions, applicants must be complete the Virginia Tech "Application for Graduate Assistantships, Fellowships, and Departmental Placement" form.
