Study Abroad Opportunities

Communication and Media in China - Summer I 2010
This study abroad opportunity combines three weeks in China followed by two weeks of online work to complete the courses you take. We will offer three communication courses: COMM 4144 Magazine Writing, COMM 4114 Photojournalism, and a topics course, Communication and Media in China. One unique aspect of the program is that during the three weeks we travel in China, we also will learn some basic conversational Chinese from the staff of the Chinese Language Institute, Guilin, China.

The tentative schedule is to arrive in Guilin, China, via Beijing, on May 22. Classes will begin in Guilin on May 24. In addition to Guilin, we will spend time in Shanghai and Beijing.

There will be an initial interest meeting on Monday, October 12. Specific time and place will be posted later.

International Perspectives on Communication, Summer I 2010
This opportunity combines online learning with an education abroad experience in Europe. The initial two weeks of instruction takes place in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland at the CESA facility, and the remainder of the Summer I Semester will be completed online.

Riva San Vitale, Switzerland: May 26-June 9; online-June 9-July 2

Depending on student interest, we will offer three of the following courses: International Public Relations (COMM 4244), International Persuasion, International Communication (COMM 4044), and Intro to International Communication Research. Riva San Vitale, Switzerland: May 24- June 3; online-June 3-July 3.

Participants are tentatively scheduled to arrive in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland on May 23. Classes will begin on May 24. Some preparations for the program will take place during a 1-credit Spring Semester course.

Consortium of Universities for International Studies
Virginia Tech participates in this program for business and communication undergraduate and graduate students. Based in Italy and administered by the University of Kansas, all CIU courses are taught in English, although you learn Italian while in the program. CIU features a residential campus and faculty from 40 U.S. universities. Deadline for Spring 2010 admission is October 15. More information is available at www.cimbaitaly.com.

Additional Education Abroad Opportunities
Five types of study abroad programs are available depending upon where you would like to go and what you would like to accomplish. According to Virginia Tech's Office of International Research, Education, and Development, they include:
  1. Direct Exchange Programs - Students pay usual Virginia Tech tuition and fees to study at an overseas university. These programs include the Virginia Tech bilateral Exchange Program and the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).
  2. VT Direct - Virginia Tech offers a limited number of study abroad opportunities at some popular member institutions on a non-reciprocal basis. VT Direct sites are available in Australia, Greece, and New Zealand.
  3. Center for European Studies and Architecture (CESA) - Program run by Virginia Tech faculty, located in southern Switzerland.
  4. Virginia Tech Faculty-led Programs - Programs available for Virginia Tech students, but run through different Virginia Tech Colleges.
  5. Non-Virginia Tech Programs - Programs available for Virginia Tech students, but run through another university. For information and links concerning these programs, please visit Virginia Tech's Office of International Research, Education, and Development at http://www.educationabroad.vt.edu.
